Doctors Drum - Giving Doctors Independent Voice
When we talk to anyone about Doctors Drum they nearly always ask, "What's the topic and who's on the panel?". There is more to each event than that....hence these notes.
Whose Behind Them? They are organised by Medical Forum magazine as regular independent events for the whole medical profession to discuss topics relevant to them. Medical Forum promotes the events, approaches potential supporters of the breakfast, follows-up those attending, finds the venue, maintains the website, etc.
Topic Selection? This is chosen from amongst the many suggestions, a topic that is relevant to all doctors today, challenges us, and is very important to professionalism and medical ethics. We have a rough idea of how things will go but on the day, the direction of the discussion is determined by audience-panel interaction!
The Purpose? Doctors Drum Q&A-style events have been developed to bring doctors and others in the medical community together to speak openly, safely and with good nature about issues that affect health in Western Australia. Participants seek better understanding around the chosen topic. It's about working together and encouraging and valuing input. The Doctors Drum is a way that many of us can feel inspired to make a difference.
The Panel? Each panel represents a broad cross section of people relevant to each topic (see below). None are paid but they give their time willingly, which we are grateful for. Panellists are chosen based on their knowledge of the topic (definitely not their political persuasion) and their willingness to answer questions.
The Audience? About 50:50 GPs and Specialists who share an interest in the topic and can find the time to come along. Many just listen and put a face to a name over breakfast. Many contribute questions and comment.
Part Played by Event Supporters? Financial supporters ensure the success of each event, so that everyone leaves reinvigorated. They chose to get involved because they feel aligned with the WA medical community and the chosen topic.
